MFL tank floor inspection: the technical context

The floor is the most critical component of an atmospheric storage tank. It is the surface in permanent contact with the soil and the stored product, subject to corrosion from both sides, and it is where a perforation translates directly into environmental risk and unscheduled shutdown.

MFL (Magnetic Flux Leakage) scanning magnetizes the floor plate and detects the magnetic flux leakage caused by metal loss. It is the screening technique used to cover large areas quickly, map the regions with indications and direct ultrasonic thickness measurement only to where it is needed.

In the internal inspection cycle established by API 653, this combination — MFL scanning for coverage and ultrasonics for quantification — is what supports the remaining thickness calculation and the definition of the next inspection interval.

What is MFL tank floor inspection?
MFL (Magnetic Flux Leakage) is a non-destructive testing technique that magnetizes the tank floor plate. Where metal loss exists — corrosion, pitting, erosion — the magnetic flux escapes the plate and is captured by sensors, indicating the location and severity of the thickness loss.
Why does API 653 require scanning the tank floor?
API 653 covers the inspection, repair, alteration and reconstruction of atmospheric storage tanks. In an internal inspection, the floor is the most critical component: it is where soil-side corrosion occurs and where a leak creates environmental risk. That is why the standard provides for floor condition assessment, typically by MFL scanning complemented by ultrasonic thickness measurement on relevant indications.
Is the TANK-4000ME already available in Brazil?
